Dan Gordon’s lifelong dream was realized in March of 1997 when the first batch of beer was brewed at our state-of-the-art brewing and bottling facility, located in San Jose, California. The 114,000 square foot facility was designed and engineered by Dan Gordon, who did not spare any detail. Although we recreate old world authentic recipes, we use modern day techniques and technology. The brewery operates 24/7 and uses the highest quality two-row malted barley, Hallertauer hops, and German yeast from Weihenstephan, to ensure that quality is never sacrificed.

Back to 1987, Dan Gordon is one of the most sought-after brewers in the country, while Dean Biersch, an experienced restaurateur and beer lover, is searching for a partner to help open a brewery restaurant. A mutual friend arranges a meeting, so they sit down, start talking beer, and the rest is history. Together Dan and Dean opened the first Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant in Palo Alto in 1988.

From the get-go, Dan and Dean had a clear vision of what they wanted: a monument to beer, where people could come drink freshly brewed beer and have a great meal simultaneously. The only beers served would be authentic, German-style lagers and ales, brewed in the tradition of the ones Dan brewed while attending The Technical University of Munich, or the most renowned brewing school in the world. Beer would be brewed according to Reinheitsgetbot (the age-old German Purity Law of beer) with only the finest ingredients: Hallertauer hops, two-row malted barley, a special yeast strain imported directly from Germany, and water.

Gordon Biersch operates a state-of-the-art brewing and bottling plant in San Jose, California. We specialize in brewing authentic German-style lagers. In order to brew these beers with the dignity they deserve, we adhere to the German Beer Purity Law called The Reinheitsgebot. Adhering to this purity law means we have strict qualitative processes and controls set in place, differentiating our beer from many other others.

Acquired by Big River Brewing Company in 1999, Gordon Biersch currently operates 30 restaurants in the United States, including Honolulu, Hawaii. Additionally, three Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants operate in Taiwan. Most of our restaurants feature an on-site brewery where our Brewmasters create their award-winning house beers, as well as limited-time brews that compliment all seasons. Each seasonal beer is celebrated with a tapping party that’s open to the public were patrons are encouraged to sample the latest seasonal beer and menu.

UPDATE: Gordon Biersch closed the Penn Quarter restaurant located in the Old Riggs Bank building in the heart of Washington DC,  on September 30, 2018 after 17 years. The Courtyard by Marriott hotel that the housed the location closed its doors about a month later. The location was the second-oldest continuously operating brewery in D.C., bested only by District ChopHouse and Brewery.  Brewing operations were most recently in the hands of brewer Scott Lasater, but others came before him, including Jason Oliver. Oliver went on to help launch Devils Backbone Brewing Company in 2008.

The Gordon Biersch heritage of superior beer, great food and good times are now served up fresh daily in locations stretching coast to coast. Committed to using only the freshest and finest ingredients, our restaurant showcases a passion for food with seasonal menus, daily specials and frequent changes to the regular menu. Our restaurant, located in the original Riggs Bank Building, features a unique and classic décor and an inviting atmosphere.
