Lakes & Legends officially opened in December of 2015 on the ground floor of Minneapolis’ LPM Apartments, a $118 million, 36 story high-rise apartment building that opened in 2014, in the heart of Loring Park, just feet from downtown Minneapolis. Lakes & Legends are a family-owned and operated brewery. Ethan Applen, the brewery’s CEO started the brewery with co-owner and mother, Kathleen Applen, along with business associate and brother-in-law, Derrick Taylor.
Lakes & Legends chasing the farm-to-bottle philosophy, focuses on producing farmhouse and Belgium-inspired beers, featuring ingredients from local growers. They were the first brewery member of Minnesota Grown, a group put together by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
Taylor and Applen hired Andrew Dimery, a professional brewer who worked for Bluegrass Brewing in Kentucky and Sun King Brewery in Indiana, to be their head brewer. Dimery has perfected recipes for the farmhouse saisons, wits, and Trappist-style ales.
The rustic feel is strong in the 3,500 square foot taproom, which the owner describes as an urban farmhouse with an earthy décor and regular live music. The farmhouse-inspired 200-person taproom is replete with reclaimed barn wood and greenery, and the brewhouse is equipped with a 15-barrel brewing system, three 30-barrel fermenters, and two 15-barrel fermenters. Each beer on tap is an easy-drinking Belgian inspired brew. The menu consists of goldens, whits and saisons.
We focus on quality ingredients, spotlighting our farming partners wherever possible. We take that quality and extend it to our taproom, creating a welcoming space where communities come together, slow down, and create those experiences that last a lifetime.
