Big Timber Brewing Company, located in Elkins, West Virginia. It started as a dream — but after seven years of reality, co-founder Ashley Kwasniewski is still as giddy as ever.

After high school, Kwasniewski, a recreationist, traveled before eventually settling in Missoula, Montana. Upon her arrival in the Montana mountains, she met her husband and eventual business partner, Matt Kwasniewski. The duo immediately got to work on their vision to operate a successful brewing company.

Following Mr. Kwasniewski’s brewing internship in 2011, the two moved to North Central West Virginia to formally open Big Timber Brewing Company. Founded in 2014, the company has experienced rapid and widespread success. They were winners of the Horizon Award and the 2019 Brilliant Stream award for the Best Brewery in West Virginia.

While many businesses in the state experienced a decline in business, Big Timber Brewing Co. continued to grow. They purchased and renovated a new brewing location and continued progress on opening an impressive new taproom just up the road in Elkins WV in early 2015.  The taproom has interior has lots of wooden features – tabletops, bar stools, shelving – in honor of the lumber industry that kept Elkins alive for so many years.

Here in West Virginia, all of our water comes out of forests. A lot of my family’s livelihood comes from forests and clean water, and the community here in Elkins thrives on that. Water is a brewery’s most consumed ingredient. We are fortunate to have good water close to the source, and we want to keep it that way.

Since the beginning of 2019, Big Timber has been producing beer in the new brewery. The new brewery is a 6900 square foot space whereas the old brewery had only 2200 square feet to work with. With the increase in space, the new brewery has more than doubled with 450 barrels of fermentation space with plenty of room to grow. Also the new brewery contains 12 fermenters, all varying in size, therefore allowing the brewers to increase the variety of Big Timber beer produced.  They have everything onsite like a laboratory for quality assurance, a cold storage room for draft and canned beer, a grain mill, hop freezer room, and large malt silo to keep fresh ingredients on hand, and a keg filler and cleaning station. Another interesting update is the installment of solar panels on the roof of the facility.

Development continued and in 2019 a new taproom is being built. It will be about 4200 square feet and compared to the old one at 1100 square feet. The new taproom will almost quadruple the space of the current one. Brewery tours and tastings will be available for visitors to learn about the Big Timber brewing process and what makes their beer one of the best in the state. Not only will the amount of indoor seating expand, outdoor seating will also be available. Weekly live music has always been a huge hit at Big Timber and that won’t stop at the new facility.

One of the main highlights of the new brewpub is the outdoor space that encompasses the entire back part of the facility. Patrons will have the opportunity to enjoy the beer garden and fresh air that compliments the views of the Tygart River flowing below. The beer garden features a large, elevated concrete pad and green space that is handicap accessible for all to enjoy a variety of yard games like cornhole. Another fun addition to the outdoor space, is an indoor, outdoor fireplace so on those chilly, cool nights you’ll be able to warm up not only with beer, but also relax by the fire.

Big Timber Brewing’s brewery and taproom is located in the Heart of Appalachia, Elkins, West Virginia.  Our name pays homage to the surrounding forests and the industry that built our community.  We make beer we love and enjoy doing it, creating a product that we, our town, and our State can take pride in.  What started as a dream, became a reality in 2014 when our first keg went out the door, and our commitment to our beer, our community, and our dream continues to grow stronger everyday.
