As true natives of West Virginia it had long been stepbrothers Brian Arnett & Willie Lehman’s dream to bring high quality, hand-crafted beer back to their home state. In October of 2005 Mountain State Brewing Co. was founded in Thomas, WV – one of three in-state breweries at the time – and the only one distributing outside it’s immediate region. Today there are in upwards of 28. Lehmann designed the brewery’s logo and building. Arnett developed the recipes.
At over 3,000 ft. in elevation, Mountain State Brewing Co. sits at the top of the watershed, allowing beer to be brewed with the purest water possible. Starting with just a 3-barrel brew system, the brewhouse quickly needed to expand to more than double that capacity to meet increasing demand. Since then they’ve established one of the largest microbrewery distribution footprints in the state of West Virginia.
Attached to the Thomas brew house is Mountain State Brewing Co.’s tap room and music hall which is like walking into a bar in someone’s home. The laid back atmosphere is complimented with a Foosball table; copper top bar with a stone base; sawhorse bar stools and random memorabilia. A custom stone work in the fireplace is the shape of the MSB logo and crafted by co-owner Willie. Also adding to the brewery’s homey feel is the use of local material and local ingredients in the brew. The stones in the base of the bar were picked out of fields and some foundations in the area by Arnett and Lehmann.
Seasonal kitchen offerings, brewery tours, a live music & events schedule and the freshest brews available make MSBC a destination stop for locals and travelers alike. Mountain State Brewing Co. currently brews four flagship ales year round that are readily available for tasting in the tap room during pub hours, as well as growler sales to go.
The brewery was expanded from a seven-barrel brewhouse to a new 30 barrel brew houses, which will include bright tanks and 120-barrel fermenters. The fermenters will take the process down from a week’s worth of work to two days. The current brewing system is a two-tank system and the new one will be a four-tank system. There are two silos located outside at the brewery, which holds an English pale malt, the base for of any ale. The brewing company also has it’s own one-acre hops farm at Deep Creek, where Goldings, Cascades and Willamette hops is grown.
An alternative concept and sister operation Iron Horse Tavern was established in 2014 as a local gastropub and tavern focusing on elevated pub food and highlighting West Virginia craft beer. A second Iron Horse Tavern location opened in Morgantown at the University Town Centre in the summer of 2018.
Supplemental to the brewery and distribution business based in Thomas WV, the Mountain State Brewing Co. brand includes a tap room and three full-scale restaurants and brew pubs in Morgantown, Deep Creek Lake, MD and the newest addition in Bridgeport, WV.
